Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan unveiled a couple of all-electric vehicle prototypes that will launch expected in 2022, TOGG is the new state-supported automotive enterprise. The first vehicle to launch will be a compact SUV. A 3.7-billion-dollar investment was made to enable the company to produce 175,000 units.
TOGG’s CEO is former Bosch executive Gurcan Karakas. The company’s COO is Sergio Rocha, who is the former CEO of General Motors Korea.
Specs for TOGG models roughly reflect state-of-the-art EV technology. The visual designs are somewhat generic.
The vehicles are expected to provide no less than about 186 miles in range, although details about battery size are not yet known. There will be a base option with a single 200-horsepower motor in a rear-wheel-drive configuration. A second dual-motor, all-wheel-drive 400-hp variant could provide up to 300 miles on a single charge.
TOGG states that its base model compact SUV and mid-sized sedans have a single electrical motor of 200 horsepower that will be able to go from 0 to 100 km in 7.6 seconds it might not be the fastest, but surely it ranks well with other cars of its size. TOGG also will be making a performance model with 2 motors with a combined 400 horsepower with a 0 to 100 km in just 4.8 seconds. All these models will have only a rear-wheel-drive option. TOGG will have 5 different models over the next 15 years.
TOGG wants to sell their car domestically first, but also have plans to turn TOGG into an international brand. The factory will be located in Bursa, a manufacturing hub. The factory, scheduled to be completed in 2021, is expected to employ 4,300 people.
President Erdoğan also plans to build EV charging infrastructure in Turkey, making it ready by 2022 in time for the first vehicle’s release.
With all this said it comes to show that turkey’s 2023 vision is becoming a reality, making it a great country of international investments.
